Irradiance The Dream Guild Chronicles Book One eBook David Bruns

I read this as part of the 3-book collection. Good set of stories building on each other, but each able to stand on its own. Basic story thread is of a world invisibly led/controlled by multiple generations of a cloned ruler, filled with people conditioned to suppress individual feelings and connections in favor of the larger community through psionics, unknowingly threatened by the imminent decay of their sun. Children are bioengineered using artificial birth rather than conceived naturally but nurtured through childhood by co-parents. Against that backdrop, a scientist and spaceship pilot co-parent twins with the unique psionic capability of precongition but also some undesirable 'throwback' genetic characteristics.

The first book (Irradiance) centers around the scientist's discovery of the sun's impending decay coupled with a threat to their twins existence, and the family's escape on a stolen starship from their world with its immediate dangers. The second (Sight) is the story of one twin being left and becoming established on a new world, independently of the others. The third (Sacrifice) is the story of the second twin being left and becoming established on a second new world. The rest of the escapees return to their original world and their fate is left unknown - potential for additional stories to come.

The writing is good, the plot logical if opportunistic, with an emphasis on character and plot rather than the science of these worlds. Best read in sequence, with unresolved questions at the end of each story, but not really cliffhangers per se.

Irradiance The Dream Guild Chronicles Book One eBook David Bruns Reviews

First, I want to praise this book for its professionalism. A lot of indie authors don't seem to go to the trouble with editing and artwork that David Bruns has. I didn't find a single grammatical error or typo. The cover art is really high quality too and looks as good as if it were traditionally published. You can tell this author really takes his new writing career seriously.

Speaking of which, the writing is really good. It's really well paced and suspenseful and even though I don't usually read a lot of sci-fi, I really liked this book and can't wait to read the next one.

The twins are my favorite characters in the book, I'd love to learn more about their abilities in the next one!

I definitely recommend this book for anyone who likes sci fi or anyone wanting to give it a go! It does get a little scientific at parts (but maybe that's just me). The overall writing is pretty light and not too intense, even for people who aren't really used to it. Like I said, I don't usually read this kind of book but this one, I loved.
I was anticipating the release of David Bruns' second novel, having already read The Dream Guild and referred it to my two daughters. I was once again pleased with the engaging, alive characters of the book. I did not expect to find such a well-described and vivid scenescape, and an entire society and culture different than our own described to me. I am most anxious now to get the second book in the Dream Guild Chronicles to continue to learn about the fate of Sindra, and Maribel and her family.

All the elements are there--a central premise that is current and disturbingly similar to Earth?, characters as real as you and me, protagonist and antagonist (I will control the world (even if it kills me, and its for your own good), the crucible and the conflict.

I was saddened that I reached the end so quickly...well done David! Once again, I have referred it to my two girls who read ravenously.

I read David Brun's first book - The Dream Guild - and once I realized it was available, I checked this book out from the Lending Library. Now, I wasn't sure what to expect of Irradiance, having read David Brun's first book, The Dream Guild. Let me start off by saying that this is a much different book than his first. First, this is geared much more toward an adult audience with a richer and more vibrant world that the story was built within. And for that, I'm glad. I really liked the dystopian world where certain discoveries are made that make the government's blind-eye world view questioned to such a point where they decide to address the questioning. Decisively.

Second, the structure of Sindra's society was logical - and although it is one that I found myself at odds with its ideals for a number of reasons, it held a certain level of calm and order to it... until the layers were peeled back. I liked how the space travel was portrayed, and I will have to admit that their recycling program turned out a bit more thorough than I had imagined. But that's a good thing, because in a way it reflects on the unsustainability of their society both on the human level as well as the societal level itself.

The social constraints aside, I liked how the telepathy impacted people's interactions as well as the crystals and the role they played in their society, as well as the limitations of the crystals themselves.

When reading the book, I quickly became invested in the protagonist and the main characters. While I could see the direction that the story itself was headed in, there were a number of twists that took me by surprise. In the end, I definitely found myself rooting for the Book Club, and all who belonged to it.

I do have two minor qualms about the story. The first - the story felt a bit too short. The second for me was the pseudo-cliff-hanger ending. I won't give any details, but it feels like there were two warring emotions at the end, the anxious joy of success and the suck your breath in and wait for it cliff-hanger. For me, I wish there was more of the former and a bit less of the latter - but this is purely a personal preference.

I liked the pacing of the plot and how the story itself unfolded. The richness of the dystopic world that was built is something that I wasn't necessarily expecting, but am glad that I found. I will certainly be reading the next book when it comes out, and I highly recommend this book for a fun read that just happens to have some faintly serious undertones nestled within.

Above all else - remember... The mind is the true voice of a Citizen. Now do your civic duty, Citizen, and read this book.
