I have just finished the Long War series and have chosen to wait until all books were read before posting a review. I've elected to post a review of the entire series here, in Book 1,Killer of Men, because naturally if someone was interested in reading Mr. Cameron's work, they would and should start with the first book. Thus my rating applies to ALL of the books in the series. First let me say that I love this part of history, as I'm sure many who've read these books do, and I'm also sure that all of us who do, have read volumes and volumes of fiction (and even perhaps historical accounts, e.g. Herodotus) on this time period. I'm not ashamed to say that I've read some real junk and retreads from writers who have relied upon the mysteries and greatness of the period to carry the story without any regard for the quality of the telling. This is not the case with the Long War series. Not by a long shot. These books, all of them, are...well...classics. They are complete with no flaws and I loved every minute that I had with them. These books are the best of the best. Read them, don't read them. I care not. It won't change the fact that Mr. Cameron's writing is pure genius and his storytelling is one of a kind.

I enjoyed this book from the first page to the last. The story is detailed right from the lips of an elderly Arimnestos to his beloved daughter. No happy tale this. Rather it is the revelation to his daughter that he is a killer of men; a warrior that comes alive in the midst of blood, death and carnage. The story begins with a young Arimnestos given the rare gift (especially for the son of a simple bronze-smith) of a classical education which included reading and mathematics and equally important in those times, physical education in the arts of warfare. At a young age Arimnestos is thrust into a Phalanx and brutal battle with the Persians. After seeing his father and brother killed he's sold into slavery and it is then that the true story of young Armnestos' life as a killer of men truly begins.

Cameron does a remarkable job of making the reader feel as if he's walking the ancient world of Greece during the bronze and iron age, while at the same time seeing the same motivations that drive us today. This book ends with the promise of more to be said from Arimnestos and I for one am looking forward to hearing from him again.

A great piece of history that entertains and enlightens. Loved it!
There are some authors where when a book is read the reader can feel the action, the emotion, the content; almost as if he has experienced it. To create these experiences for the reader in an historical fiction context is exceptionally difficult. It is obvious Cameron has done it, experienced it, and lived it (the "it" being bronze age slave, lover, and warrior-hoplite). The "slave" part may be a reach, but the authenticity of what that experience may have been like is extraordinarily done. I appreciate Cameron's commentary and encouragement to learn more about being and living in the bronze age. If you want to read an excellent novel that is extremely well written and well researched (with practical knowledge and experience), this series is fantastic and rich with "wow."
This book is a dual achievement. A novel that recreates vividly, accurately and with gusto a famous historical era and makes it pleasantly understandable for the modern reader. It is also the story of the growth into hard manhood of a Platean teenager and his quest to find his deeper self following the teachings of Heraclitus the philosopher while living a violent life in that tumultuous era.
With inventiveness and literary elegance the author introduces the major historical personalities of those times like the Greek Miltiades and the Persian Artaphernes .
It is a very entertaining book to read,a very accurate and pleasantly presented history lesson and also the narrative of the evolution into both hard manhood and knowledge of self in the search of his destiny of a remarkable young man,the hero of the novel.
A Classic, not to be missed by the fans of the historical novel.
