When Kitty Cummings is asked to take in four orphaned children, she's not sure she's the mother they need. In her considered opinion, the Nevada territory is no place to raise a family. As the town called Mexican Spur grows into a community, Kitty and her husband, Ward, learn how love heals even the deepest wounds. Until the renegades who killed the children's parents return. Can the ready-made family survive another heart wrenching good-bye?

Kitty Cummings had recently lost her first baby, and she hadn’t been the same. Even the relationship between her and her husband is strained. When he wants them to take in four orphaned children, Kitty doesn’t think she can do it, but she tries to make the right decision. With rustlers, renegades, and the rough conditions in the early West, everything comes to a head quickly. This is a very realistic book of a woman’s misgivings and struggles. It’s an enjoyable story, but it read like a much shorter novella than the 126 pages listed. I only noticed two mistakes: “you’re” for “your” and one incident of taking God’s name in vain in a Christian book. The ending was also pretty weak and not as good as the rest of the novella. I gave it 4.5 stars, which rounded up to a five.

A very good story of the early west. A story of hardship and survival plus the resilience of children. Recommended.
Historical life in the West. A small town without a sheriff. A small wagon train ambushed by renegades, supposedly, & a few men wanted quick revenge. A couple whose child died & causes strife between them.
4 kids who were sent out to collect fuel when the wagon train was attacked. Then an older couple who were part of the town are killed.
- Is a very interesting story full of different emotions, growing attitudes. Keeps you reading.
